You may have received this service as a 60th birthday gift or a 70th birthday gift. Or, if you have been asked by a relative to consider having your autobiography created, your initial reaction might be ‘Autobiographies are only for the rich and famous’, ‘My life isn’t interesting enough to record’, or ‘Nobody would be interested in reading about my life’. However, these initial thoughts are from your perspective, not the perspective of those who love and care for you.
Ordinary people lead very interesting lives and every life is one of a kind. Nobody will ever have a life just like yours and the life experiences you have will be significantly different than those of your children or grandchildren. Everyone has a captivating life story just waiting to be told.
The main reasons why people have an autobiography created tend to be
- Your parents will not be around forever, and in time to come it would be priceless to be able to reminisce by reading your parents' autobiography, reflections and memories or even listen to them recounting stories about growing up, getting married and raising you.
- Your parents may be the only people who can recount memories and stories of your great-grandparents. You want to capture your parents’ memories of their childhood, growing up, how they met, what it was like raising their children before these memories are lost forever.
- You may want your children to be able to know their grandparents better and to hear the stories you yourself heard growing up.
- As a grandparent you may not have the opportunity to spend quality time with your grandchildren, as you had with your grandparents. An autobiography could be your chance to tell them about your own childhood, your life, and to pass on words of advice that you have learned throughout the years.
- Perhaps your children or grandchildren are constantly asking you to tell them stories of your own childhood. With an autobiography, you can preserve these stories for them to read anytime – whether it be tomorrow, next year, or 10 years from now
- You realise that you have led a unique and interesting life, and would love to get it down on paper for your own satisfaction. This is an easy, convenient, enjoyable and affordable way to tell your story.
- You are interested in genealogy, family history and family trees and see this as a perfect legacy for future generations.
