Both my grandfathers had died before I was born so I know very little about them. When my dad died suddenly two years ago, one of my biggest regrets was that my one year old son wouldn’t get to know his grandfather as he grew up. Apart from the obvious grief and sense of loss I also had the overwhelming fear that my own memories of him would fade with time. A family member recently drew up our family tree which is great to see but at the end of the day it's simply a list of names. You get no sense of what your ancestors were like or what kind of lives they led.
When I discovered the biography memoir service I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. Everyday Biographies arranged to get in touch with me and my mum and had telephone conversations to capture our memories and what we knew of my dad throughout his life. I thought the material they sent us was great and really made it easy to remember the key things. The telephone calls were very informal and simply involved us talking about what we remembered. Most of the memories were of the things he got up to; what he was like as a brother, husband, dad and a friend – all the stories that make us smile. We also shared photos of him throughout his life.
It was incredible to see and read the finished book. It’s wonderful to be able to read his life story. I know my son will love reading it in years to come and will feel very close to his grandad.
